First Nations Clean Energy Strategy

First Nations Clean Energy Strategy

In 2023, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water released the ‘First Nations Clean Energy Strategy Consultation Paper.’

Submissions were requested as the first step in developing the First Nations Clean Energy Strategy.

This consultation sought views on multiple objectives, underpinned by five guiding principles informed by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals adopted in 2015.

Reconciliation Australia provided a submission that strongly recommended the renewable energy sector implement policy and legislation adhering to UNDRIP principles to uphold the rights and interests of First Nations peoples.

We emphasised the critical importance of this to promote equitable participation in the clean energy economy for First Nations peoples, and to prevent environmental, cultural and socioeconomic impacts of clean energy projects in First Nations communities.
