Review to Inform a Better and Fairer Education System

Reconciliation Australia provided recommendations for the Department of Education’s Better and Fairer Education System Consultation Paper, which aligns with a previous submission to the Productivity Commission’s Review of the National School Reform Agreement – Interim Report.

Recommendations included:

  1. An embedded focus on reconciliation at the individual teacher, whole-school institution, and education sector levels.
  2. Increased support for anti-racism programs and pedagogy across levels of education.
  3. Government and education sectors to advocate for the development and implementation of Reconciliation Action Plans and activities.
  4. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights to self-determination to be respected, and perspectives included in all areas of policy and program development.
  5. Ongoing support for initiatives that ensure education systems and institutions have processes and policies that are consistent with, and promote, the principles outlined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
