The role

Join Reconciliation Australia as our Senior Manager, Community Truth-telling Pathways and lead the strategic and operational management of our newest program. This is your opportunity to play a leadership role in our work to advance a national culture of truth-telling that is place based, First Nations led, action oriented and strengths focused.

This role ensures that the program delivers high impact work which contributes to reconciliation and support First Nations self-determination. The Community Truth-telling Pathways program is designed to build capacity of Australians to engage in local truth-telling, support communities leading truth-telling work, and develop knowledge about the conditions needed to support safe truth-telling processes.

Working closely with the General Manager, Community Impact, you will collaborate across the organisation to embed a truth-telling focus in all our work and build impactful relationships with key external stakeholders.

This role offers a balance of strategic engagement and operational program delivery, ensuring the work is underpinned by good practice, effective resource management and strategic alignment.

About you

You’re a strategic thinker with deep expertise working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and communities and have a knowledge of the cultural and social rights of First Nations peoples. You have strong program development and project management experience.

You’re comfortable working in complex environments, with proven experience delivering responsive, community-led processes. You’re a skilled communicator who is comfortable building relationships with diverse stakeholders and representing Reconciliation Australia externally.

Your experience includes managing high performing teams and maintaining respectful, culturally responsive practices. You are experienced at managing multiple priorities and deadlines and effectively translating strategy into practice.

Most importantly, you’re passionate about the role of truth-telling in driving systems change, better outcomes for First Nations communities and stronger, more respectful communities for all Australians. You’re committed to learning about and contributing to reconciliation and have a genuine commitment to our vision of a just, equitable and reconciled Australia.

Selection criteria

Essential

  • Identify and be recognised in the community as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Understanding of and an ability to work in a culturally responsive way with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • High level ability to develop and manage complex programs, including strategic direction, implementation of an effective program cycle, risk management processes, managing a large budget, financial acumen and reporting.
  • Project management and organisational skills.
  • Proven experience to design and deliver effective community engagement and culturally appropriate communications.
  • Extensive experience in leading, managing and developing high performing teams and ability to collaborate with cross-function teams.
  • Ability to take initiative, respond to complex environments and prioritise work over a range of projects to define timeframes.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to a range of audiences.
  • Strong experience in high level meeting facilitation and conflict management skills.
  • Commitment and willingness to learn about and contribute to reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.

Desirable

  • Experience in and/or an understanding of truth-telling in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context.
  • Experience with research, resource development or funding administration.

Salary

The salary range for this role is $127,500 – $138,000 + superannuation (inclusive of 17.5% leave loading), dependent on experience and qualifications.

Paul Girrawah House

Paul Girrawah House has multiple First Nation ancestries from the South-East Canberra region, including the Ngambri-Ngurmal (Walgalu), Pajong (Gundungurra), Wallabollooa (Ngunnawal) and Erambie/Brungle (Wiradyuri) family groups.

Paul acknowledges his diverse First Nation history, he particularly identifies as a descendant of Onyong aka Jindoomang from Weereewaa (Lake George) and Henry ‘Black Harry’ Williams from Namadgi who were both multilingual, essentially Walgalu-Ngunnawal-Wiradjuri speaking warriors and Ngunnawal–Wallaballooa man William Lane aka ‘Billy the Bull’ - Murrjinille.

Paul was born at the old Canberra hospital in the centre of his ancestral country and strongly acknowledges his First Nation matriarch ancestors, in particular his mother Dr Aunty Matilda House-Williams and grandmother, Ms Pearl Simpson-Wedge.

Paul completed a Bachelor of Community Management from Macquarie University, and Graduate Certificate in Wiradjuri Language, Culture and Heritage and Management from CSU.

Paul provided the Welcome to Country for the 47th Opening of Federal Parliament in 2022. Paul is Board Director, Ngambri Local Aboriginal Land Council, Member Indigenous Reference Group, National Museum of Australia and Australian Government Voice Referendum Engagement Group.  

Paul works on country with the ANU, First Nations Portfolio as a Senior Community Engagement Officer
