The new ad, screening tonight, will take viewers on a journey through Australia’s history – celebrating big achievements and inviting today’s generation to step up and do something great.
Its launch coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum – the most successful referendum in Australia’s history where more than 90 per cent of Australians voted “Yes” for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights.
It also follows the historic meeting this week of over 250 First Nations’ people at Uluru, and the Statement from the Heart calling for truth telling in our national story.
The new Take the Next Step commercial takes us on board a bus travelling through generational milestones in Australia’s history.

The bus, a deliberate nod to the 1965 Freedom Rides, stops at milestones along the way to collect everyday Australians who have been part of creating change.

 

At the first stop the bus picks up women fighting for their right to vote in the 1900s. Next stop it’s men and women who served in both world wars, then on to engineers who built the Snowy Hydro, the 1967 campaigners for Aboriginal and civil rights, and to the volunteers and fans of the 2000 Olympics.
As the bus fills up the final passengers are today’s generation, urged to take the next step to do something great and recognise our full history.
“Every Australian generation has done something great and we have a proud history to show for it,” says Justin Mohamed, Chief Executive Reconciliation Australia.

 
“However at the moment, our nation struggles to fully acknowledge the 50,000 year history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These are the oldest cultures in the world but are still not acknowledged in our educational and legal frameworks.
“It’s time for our generation to do something great and fulfil our potential and celebrate our unique and ancient culture.

 
“This can’t be done by the politicians – like so many great moments in our history it needs to be fueled by people power, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous.”
“It’s a chance for all of us to do something our kids can be proud of.”

 

Reconciliation Australia Deputy CEO, Karen Mundine said this year’s National Reconciliation Week celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the 1967 referendum and the 25th anniversary of the Mabo decision.
“The 1967 referendum was the most successful referendum in Australia’s history, when nine out of ten Australians voted “yes” for Aboriginal rights,” Ms Mundine said.

 
“Celebrating this anniversary is an opportunity to remind Australians that we, the people, must come together as a nation to drive change and promote reconciliation.”
