Defeat of changes to s18C shows racism has no place in Australia

In Media Release, News, Reconciliation Australia

“As a result of the groundswell of support led by communities all across multicultural Australia, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, we have seen changes to Section 18C defeated,” said Reconciliation Australia CEO Justin Mohamed.

“Last night, the Senate took a stand against racism, and Reconciliation Australia believes this outcome shows all Australians that their right to be free from racial discrimination remains protected in Australia.”

“The defeat of the proposed changes to s18C should be considered a success in the advancement of reconciliation. Any individual who has experienced racial discrimination knows that acts of racism have real and lasting impact, and for more than 40 years the Racial Discrimination Act has been helping protect people from racial prejudice,” Mr Mohamed continued.

Reconciliation Australia is proud to be part of a community of individuals and organisations who stood together to defend the Racial Discrimination Act.

“This result sends a strong message that racism has no place in Australia today. Reconciliation Australia thanks all our allies for their support in the fight against accepting racism in Australia society, as we continue to progress towards a just, equitable, and reconciled Australia.”
