SUMMARY:Everyday Anti-Racism and Actionable Change
DESCRIPTION:Anti-racism isn’t just a concept—it’s something we practice every day in how we think\, speak\, and show up for each other. \nThis workshop creates a space to have real conversations about racism as it appears in our everyday lives—at work\, in our communities\, and in our relationships. \nTogether\, we’ll unpack what racism can look like beyond the obvious\, and explore how we can respond in ways that are thoughtful\, accountable\, and grounded in respect.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Paul Bong
DESCRIPTION:Join the Anthropology Museum team for a special event with artist Paul Bong in conjunction with National Reconciliation Week (NRW). Paul Bong is a descendant of the Yidinji people\, whose ancestral lands encompass the fertile rainforest region extending from Cairns in the north to Babinda in the south\, and westward into the Atherton Tablelands as far as Kairi. In his practice\, Bong integrates traditional Yidinji visual motifs with contemporary techniques\, creating works in which each design is imbued with specific spiritual and cultural significance. The Yidinji shield\, traditionally produced for ceremonial use and physical defence\, holds profound cultural significance as a visual emblem of protection\, authority\, and resistance. Within Bong’s practice\, the shield is reinterpreted and reactivated not as a historical artefact\, but as a living form through which Yidinji sovereignty is asserted and sustained.

SUMMARY:Truth-listening: Readying Australia for truth
DESCRIPTION:What does it take to be ready for truth – and why has truth about Australia’s colonial past been spoken for decades\, yet gone largely unheard? The answer lies in truth‑listening: the active\, uncomfortable and deeply relational work required before meaningful change can occur. \nTruth-listening acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have long spoken truth through community spaces\, Royal Commissions\, national movements and landmark statements – often to audiences who are unprepared to listen. This raises a critical question: how can non‑Indigenous people and institutions meaningfully embed the practice of truth‑listening before moving to action? \nJoin us at UTS during Reconciliation Week for a keynote address by Blake Alan Cansdale followed by a panel discussion with Michael Rose AM\, Professor Lorena Allam\, Professor Anna Clark and Amy Persson (moderator) where they will explore what it means to listen to with integrity.
