2020 Summit

On 19 and 20 April 2008 the Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd convened an Australia 2020 Summit at Parliament House to help shape a long-term strategy for the nation’s future.

The Summit brought together Australians from across the country to tackle the long-term challenges that confront Australia’s future. These challenges require long-term responses from the nation beyond the usual three year electoral cycle.

Critical Areas

The Government brought together 1,000 leading Australians to the national Parliament to debate and develop long-term options for the nation’s development across 10 critical areas:

  1. The productivity agenda - education, skills, training, science and innovation
  2.

  3. The future of the Australian economy
  4.

  5. Population, sustainability, climate change and water
  6.

  7. Future directions for rural industries and rural communities
  8.

  9. A long-term national health strategy - including the challenges of preventative health, workforce planning and the ageing population
  10.

  11. Strengthening communities, supporting families and social inclusion
  12.

  13. Options for the future of Indigenous Australia
  14.

  15. Towards a creative Australia: the future of the arts, film and design
  16.

  17. The future of Australian governance: renewed democracy, a more open government (including the role of the media), the structure of the Federation and the rights and responsibilities of citizens
  18.

  19. Australia’s future security and prosperity in a rapidly changing region and world.

Options for the Future of Indigenous Australia Topic (including background paper)

Each participant in the 2020 summit was asked to write 200 words on their main idea and an issue that they’ve changed their mind about in the last 10 years. Reconciliation Australia’s Barbara Livesey and Jason Glanville both attended the Indigenous Affairs stream. Below are their 200 word submissions, an article they co-wrote for the media, and their reflections on the 2020 summit.
