In 1967, after ten years of campaigning, a referendum was held to change the Australian Constitution. The referendum saw more then 90% of eligible Australians vote YES to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in the national census of the population and to give the Commonwealth Government power to make specific laws for Indigenous people. This event is often referred to as the first stage of the reconciliation movement in Australia.
RA worked to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1967 referendum in 2007. We have put together some interesting facts, stories, educational material and information on the events that were held to commemorate the anniversary in this section of the website. Information on RA’s commemorations of the 40th anniversary of the referendum is available to view.
