Rugby League club leads the way in Reconciliation

The Northern Pride are the first Rugby League football club in the country at any level to have their RAP officially ratified by Reconciliation Australia. The NRL/ARL is the only other Rugby League body to have a RAP and ‘The Pride’ are very proud to be leading the way.

The Northern Pride’s RAP uses Rugby League and sport as a vehicle for reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians.

The Northern Pride club is located in Cairns and it participates in the statewide Queensland Cup. It also, through its Take Pride Program, engages participants and partners in holistic community development activities. The Take Pride Program aims to improve opportunities and pathways for individuals in local communities, in all aspects of life whether it be sport, education, career, family or community. The reach of this community development program ranges from Cairns and nearby regions to remote communities in the Gulf, Cape and Torres Strait and all points in between.

Northern Pride Chairman Bob Fowler said “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have played a massive role in Rugby League internationally, nationally, state wide and especially locally in Far North Queensland. When you look at blokes like Matty Bowen, Justin Hodges and Ty Williams we are certainly producing quality players and with over 60% of our players being from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent we are perfectly placed to make a difference". Our RAP recognises this and aims to use the strength of Rugby League, our strengths and our profile in the local community to positively influence our local community.”

Northern Pride Operations Manager Chris Sheppard said “this is about giving everybody a go and about affecting change. We realise we can’t fix everything but we can certainly make a difference and the more likeminded people and organisations we can get to stand beside us the more we can do collectively.

“The Northern Pride and its community development work is welcomed enthusiastically wherever we travel. We are inundated with requests from communities for assistance and we always welcome new partners who can help us with this work.”

Reconciliation Australia encourages you to read the Northern Pride’s Reconciliation Action Plan.

The Northern Pride welcomes contact from people and organizations that want to learn more about the Club’s RAP and community development activities, including those wishing to explore partnerships.
