Meetings / Progress to Date

In the 12 months from January 2008 to January 2009, the IFSN project has made considerable progress - the following are some of the key highlights to date:

  • Four meetings held (Feb 08, May 08, Aug 08, Nov 08), strong commitment of all participants evidenced by regular attendance & active contribution to agenda.
  • Indigenous Advisory Group (IAG) established to provide advice, direction and strategic inputs into the IFSN, bringing together well respected Indigenous leaders from across Australia.
  • Solid progress made on actions agreed to by participants, in the areas of improving financial literacy, addressing key issues faced by Indigenous consumers & developing Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs), creating opportunities for Indigenous employment.
  • Four "priority" initiatives selected by participants, to address over the course of the project, including:
    1. High cost of electronic banking
    2. Customer ID in remote communities
    3. Developing an effective communication strategy for Indigenous consumers
    4. Proposal to replicate IFSN model for Superannuation / Investment products
    5. Capacity building by creating opportunities for Indigenous organisations to network / develop partnerships across industry / government.
