The Apology (It's Time)

Apology: It’s Time is a music video created by renowned photographer Russell James in collaboration with celebrated musician will.i.am of the Black-Eyed Peas and Indigenous artist and singer Clifton Bieundurry. It also features singer Ursula Yovich, Hugh Jackman, Prof. Fiona Stanley, Mark Bin Bakar and host of other Australians.

Produced following last year’s national apology to the Stolen Generations, the video sends a powerful message in support of reconciliation and calls on all Australians to “move forward together”.

Many communities and schools are involved in reconciliation activities and Apology: It’s Time is a valuable tool that can help further this important work. Feel free to download (see below) the video and screen it at your school assembly or community gathering to stimulate discussion and reflection. Particularly for schools, students may wish to respond to the video’s call by developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

A RAP provides a school with a framework for identifying different, interrelated actions it can take towards giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids an equal chance at success in their lives.

This framework covers activities we know from international and domestic research can make a positive difference in overcoming disadvantage – fostering respectful relationships, respecting the special contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Australia, and working together to ensure Indigenous children have the same opportunities as other children in this prosperous country.

The RAP program is a rigorous and legitimate way in which schools can go about realising education and reconciliation goals and objectives. RAP schools report massive increases in cross cultural competencies of their staff, particularly teachers.

Simply download the file*, play it through a media player and project it onto a screen from a dataprojector at your school assembly, event, workshop or meeting.
